The site of the first settlement in
Barbados, Holetown is where Captain John Powell and his crew
landed in 1625, and claimed the island in the name of King
James of England. They named the area St. James’ Town, but
later changed it to Holetown because the shallow-draft ships
could enter the river at this point, reminding the sailors of
the hole back home on the Thames River.
Today Holetown is the busy, bustling area
within the St. James parish, and offers the most varied
shopping outside of Bridgetown.
