Speightstown is one of Barbados’ four
towns, and unique because it is the only one to have retained
much of the original street system. It is a charming town of
small streets lined with simple, two-story shops, many
boasting old-fashioned Georgian-style balconies and
overhanging galleries.
The construction of a by-pass highway has
routed traffic around the centre of the town, making it an
ideal place for strolling, especially on a Saturday morning

“hucksters” sell fresh fruit and
vegetables from their trays on the narrow streets.
The coastline along Speightstown is dotted
with quaint fishing villages, and fresh fish can be purchased
at the market in town, or further along the coast at Six Men’s
Bay, Sherman’s and Half Moon Fort.
In Speightstown you’ll find delightful
restaurants, and shops that produce an impressive selection of

reasonably priced merchandise. Also in town are service
facilities for cellular phones, internet cafes and banking
including The Royal Bank, First Caribbean International and
Barbados National Bank. -
